mods to the girls gaff....

Woohooo, the chicken house and run has been extended over past couple of weekends and made use of an awkward corner dead space linking it to their existing run.

The add-on-run is a great spot for them, totally sheltered and under a big tree but they get sun from dawn till about midday.

Most of the new run was built out of an old palette that was dumped in a carpark.   The run used one large reel of heavy duty galvanised steel mesh wire from wickes and the excellent purchase of a staple gun was essential (not to mention FUN!)

Overall with just a couple of long bits of wood purchased and hinges for the door and the mesh it was a rather froogle project.

To ensure the new run is secure the mesh is rolled under at the bottom and then stapled to more planks of wood before being buried with soil so nothing will get in or out.  ;-)

The entire front right section is a large door so makes it easy to get in.

The old run is about 3mtrs long and this one is about 2.5 plus the corner bit.

As yet we have four chooks, they're all pekin bantams, 2 lemon ones (Bentley and Honey) and one black (Skyline) and one white one (Nismo).

Their bedroom is big enough for up to six so I'm a little excited at seeing what's available come next Spring.  ;-)

Once Winter is out the way I fully intend to 'twee it all up'!  Bunting, plaques, paint, silly stuff.  cant wait to customise it all.  Their swing is ordered and on its way.... pics to follow...... :-)

Used a sort of hand-held angle grinder to cut the whole out of the end of the old run and smoothed it off so its safe.  below is the view from their old run looking into beginning of new one.

There was a quirky corner space to try to encompass in the project to make the new run shape work so after some ground clearance a custom section lid was made for that area which is supported by blocks so is easily lifted off to gain access to plants etc in that area.

The old run has a cut out in it for them to hop through, a portable sort of angle grinder did the job well and ensured smooth edges are safe.
